For the love of doodling

I took up doodling in earnest when I was in college...using it to pass the time in my Business Law and Intermediate Accounting classes...which may shed some light on my less than stellar grades in those courses.

I doodle when riding the bus, when riding in the car, when sitting at a coffee shop, when talking on the phone, when writing letters, when sitting in church, etc.

I find calling something a doodle rather than a drawing takes the pressure off...if I am drawing I think my creation should be stunning and mistake free but if I am doodling it is no big deal...I was just getting the wiggles out and could recycle the creation at any time.

Sometimes when I come across a doodle I made months ago I think "wow! that looks really cool!" and sometimes I think "it's time to recycle that" but I never think "I wish I hadn't created that".

  1. I like doodling too. Sometimes its nice to just put the pen to the paper and let it lead you around the page with no expectations.

  4. I LOVE these doodles! My favourite is the middle one - the repetition creates a kind of fabric print feel. Brill!

  9. What wonderful and fun doodles! I always think there's something especially freeing about doodling, as though you're tapping into what wants to come out more than what you want to bring out. Something I've been experimenting with of late is doodling with my non-dominant hand. Weird but fun.

  10. Hi Jen, I'm enjoying your doodles too. The woman's hair, who is expecting the best, is really great. Yah, the thought "I wish I hadn't created that" hasn't come across my mind either.

  12. Your "doodles" are so intricate and complex! I totally get what you are saying about taking the pressure off; I feel the same way. If I think I'm just playing then I produce much better work.
